The candidate must be very self-motivated and have a strong interest in the development of biomaterials. The ideal candidate is undergoing or have recently completed BSc/MSc studies in the area of chemistry, biomaterials, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, or similar fields, with some focus on modules relating to polymer chemistry/physics or biomaterials desirable. They would have the theoretical knowledge or some basic experience with chemical synthesis / biopolymer characterisation. Evidence of evaluation, discussion, presentation or reporting of scientific concepts is a plus. Theoretical or practical experience in basic cell work or 3D printing experience is a bonus. We require good English language skills and a work ethic suitable to the challenges we plan to offer. Familiarity with a cross-cultural/interdisciplinary environment is an advantage.

  • Starting date: ideally in January/February 2025
  • End date: A maximum internship length of up to 12 months from the start date.
  • Due to the nature of the work in cell culture labs, proof of Hepatitis B vaccination is required.
  • We provide support with accommodation in Davos, subject to availability.

Short Description

Goal: Our Biomedical Materials research group (https://www.aofoundation.org/what-we-do/research-innovation/research-programs/regenerative-orthopaedics/biomedical-materials) at AO Research Institute in Davos (ARI) is working on several biopolymers and building block of therapeutic biomaterials enabling rapid biofabrication utilising light-based crosslinking and self-assembly methods. As part of our project, Bioink platfoRm fOr invAsion anD adhEsioN (BROADEN), we aim to develop multifunctional ink formulations for the fabrication of 3D constructs to be used for a range of musculoskeletal applications. In particular, we focus on controlling the three important properties (adhesion, degradation, and cellular invasion) of the developed biomaterials.

Main Responsibilities

In this project we will develop new biopolymer technologies in our lab through rational chemical synthesis and work on understanding their physical and biological properties. As part of the project, you will have opportunity to support development of chemical synthesis routes of biopolymers; learn many characterisation techniques of biomaterials (fluorescence assays, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, rheology), utilise 3D extrusion-based printing, as well as participate in harvesting and manipulation of various cells and their biological characterisation (real time PCR, ELISAs, immunocytochemistry). If you’re looking for an exciting opportunity to develop yourself in the fields of biomaterials development, 3D printing, tissue engineering, immunomodulation and contribute to the exciting discoveries to come, do not hesitate to apply!

  • Carry out scientific work related to the project, particularly chemical synthesis of biopolymers and their characterization (e.g. NMR, rheology, DLS/zeta potential, UV assays or FTIR spectroscopy). Additional tasks may involve some cell work or biofabrication/3D printing, subject to the project requirements.
  • Evaluate, discuss and present the results within the AO Research Institute (ARI).
  • Follow the relevant processes, guidelines and SOP’s, including the valid safety regulations.
  • Maintain lab books and all relevant project documentation.

We offer

  • An interesting and varied job in an exciting and innovative organization
  • The opportunity to be part of a highly committed international team
  • Modern infrastructure
  • High degree of flexibility regarding working hours and location (depending on operational requirements)
  • Generous package of social benefits, including supplementary vacation days and pension scheme contributions
  • Internal skills training opportunities and support for continued education

If you meet the requirements of this challenging opportunity, please submit your complete online application (motivation letter, CV, recent photograph, certificates, reference letters, etc) through our online application system.
