The mission of the AO Research Institute (ARI) is excellence in applied Preclinical Research and Development within trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system and translation of this knowledge to achieve more effective patient care worldwide. The ARI contributes high quality applied Preclinical Research and Development (exploratory and translational) focused towards clinical applications/solutions as well as investigates and improves the performance of surgical procedures, devices and substances. It fosters a close relationship with the AO medical community, academic societies, and universities and provides a research environment and support for AO clinicians.

We are looking for a highly motivated

Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Bone Biology Focus Area, Davos/Switzerland

Within the Bone Biology Focus Area, we apply multimodal approaches (in vitro, in vivo, omics technologies) to study biological factors involved in the different phases of bone healing with a major focus on early immunological, angiogenic and mechano-molecular components. Via combining in vitro and in vivo expertise, we aim for identification of novel therapeutic targets, systemic biomarkers, and mechanical intervention therapies relevant towards translation of personalized medicine approaches for impaired healing conditions.


The successful applicant will be working within a multidisciplinary team investigating immunomodulation and mechanical treatments for bone healing. A first project will focus on IL-1β targeted approaches for improving the healing of bone defects. Within a second project, we will use precisely controlled loading models to link mechanics and molecular mechanism for early individualized mechanical intervention therapies under impaired healing conditions. The position may be particularly suitable for candidates experienced in cellular and molecular biology with an interest in developing cross disciplinary skills including in vivo studies and ex vivo analyses. The candidate will closely interact with internal and external collaborators focusing on the in vivo, imaging and mechanical aspects of the projects.

In this role you will be required to:


  • Plan and conduct in vitro experiments on immunomodulation (IL-1β neutralization) and mechanical regulation of bone cells (Multiwell bioreactor)

  • Contribute to in vivo bone healing experiments

  • Establish molecular methods (e.g. spatial transcriptomics, single cell RNAseq) for musculoskeletal tissue

  • Establish proteomics workflows for biomarker identification

To master this challenge you have:

  • PhD in biology or related field

  • Experience in cell culture and laboratory techniques (e.g. histology, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry)

  • Experience in molecular biology

  • Previous in vivo experience with rodents is beneficial

  • Experience in planning and executing research projects with publication of results

  • Experience in supervision is beneficial (e.g. bachelor, master students)

  • We require good English language skills
